Past incidents

Account

Billing and invoices Abuse reports
Bound to localhost, with auth on from the start

MongoDB

MongoDB installed with authentication enabled and the daemon bound to the private interface — not to the whole internet. The default that has caused more data leaks than any other is already turned off.

First boot
Soon
MongoDB, with auth on
An admin user created; anonymous access is not possible
Bound to private only
No public listener, so a scan finds nothing to talk to
A data directory sized to the plan
On the server disk, with the journal in place
Backups included
Nightly disk copies of the whole machine

Running it safely

Most MongoDB incidents are not exploits; they are an open port and no password. The image closes both, and the network firewall keeps it that way even if a config is later edited by mistake.

WhatHow it works here
MongoDB Current stable from the official repository
Reachability Private network only; open a port deliberately if you must
Users An admin to start; create per-application users yourself
Replica sets Possible across servers in the same region over the private network

What the platform adds

A private network at no cost

Your application talks to the database over private IPs, and the database needs no public address at all.

A firewall in front of the machine

Rules enforced in the network, before traffic reaches the daemon.

Snapshot before a migration

Freeze the disk, run the migration, and put it back if it went wrong.

Where it fits

Memory first, then disk

MongoDB likes to keep the working set in RAM, so memory matters more than cores. Performance VPS puts the same tiers on NVMe, which is what a write-heavy collection notices.

Getting there

From order to a working MongoDB

01

Pick MongoDB as the image

Performance VPS if writes are the workload.

02

Attach a private network

Your app server joins it and reaches the database privately.

03

Create an application user

Scoped to one database, not the admin account.

04

Point your connection string

At the private IP, never at the public one.

Questions

Straight answers before you deploy

Still deciding?
Engineers answer, not scripts.

Not by default, and that is deliberate. Reach it through an SSH tunnel, or open the port to your office range in the firewall.

Yes, across servers in the same region over the private network. Across regions you would need a tunnel.
