A clean LTS, cloud-init ready

Ubuntu

A plain Ubuntu LTS with your SSH keys attached, unattended security updates on and cloud-init ready to run whatever you hand it. The starting point when you would rather build the server yourself.

First boot
Included
Ubuntu LTS
24.04, or 22.04 if you choose it in the configurator
Your SSH keys attached
Password login can be off before the first boot finishes
Security updates on
Unattended upgrades enabled for the security pocket
Your cloud-init, run verbatim
Whatever you paste runs on first boot, as written

Which release to take

LTS releases get five years of updates, which is why both options here are LTS. Take the newest unless a dependency of yours has not caught up with it.

ReleaseWhat it means
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS The default; newest packages, supported the longest
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS For software that has not been tested on 24.04 yet
Login banner Replaced with yours — nothing announces anybody but you
Hostname Set to your own domain rather than a provider serial

What we change from stock

Your name on the login

The banner and the hostname are yours from the first SSH session.

Keys before passwords

The server can boot with password authentication already disabled.

Reverse DNS set for you

The PTR points at your hostname, which is what mail servers check.

Where it fits

Start small, resize in place

A bare server has no idea what you will put on it, so start at the entry tier. Upgrading in place keeps your data and your addresses.

Questions

Straight answers before you deploy

Still deciding?
Engineers answer, not scripts.

No. Yours travels as its own part of a multipart file; ours only sets the hostname and the login banner, and never merges with yours.

Yes — qcow2 or ISO, uploaded once and deployed in any region.
